Each April, thousands of Carnegie Mellon University alumni arrive in Pittsburgh for Spring Carnival.  Carnegie Mellon students celebrate the academic year full of hard work………by working even harder, then having a huge party. This year I’m combining my love for my alma mater and my love of shooting video with my digital SLR.

Meet Buggy. Each year for Spring Carnival, different campus organizations design, build, and race these vehicles on a course around Schenley Park.  The people pushing the long handle that extends from the back of the Buggy are called “Pushers” and the “Mechanics” do design/build work on the Buggies. A “Buggy” is a small, gravity powered, aerodynamic vehicle with a real human inside. Read again: there is a person inside of the vehicle.

You won’t see a lot of drivers being loaded into or out of the buggies on Race Day. Since it is a competition, drivers are helped into and out of the buggies in secrecy. The driver is situated inside of the car, facing forward to navigate the course. Just remember that as you watch.
